In the middle fifties it was necessary to build an additional outdoor hockey rink. The number of hockey games and practices were beginning to crowd out the figure and pleasure skaters. The pleasure ring was being invaded with young lads with hockey sticks - and this was taboo.
A rink was planned, old CNR boxcar lumber was obtained, volunteers were called and up she went.
The next year new buildings (dressing rooms and furnace room) were put up adjacent to the 2 rinks, 5 dressing rooms in all (1 to be used for summer outdoor canteen use) and a small garage for a tractor.
Now we could sit back and relax (or so we thought!). Someone came up with the idea to add a steel building to our existing clubhouse. This would be in the $60,000 cost bracket. The idea was talked over, the bank was approached and it was decided to go ahead. This building was completed in 1963 - complete with washrooms, sound system and canteen facilities. Our youngster's indoor activities were able to expand. And we were able to hold adult socials once a month. It has also helped us plan and hold bigger and better winter and summer carnivals.
Each year we hold our 'worker's ball' and any member who has worked on behalf of the club curing the year is invited. Admission is free, music is provided and refreshments are available. A good evening is had by all. In this way the club says thanks to the adults and parents who have given of their time during the year. It also provided the opportunity of getting to know our friends and neighbors better.
During the summer of 1969 Mr. Andy Moffat (President at the time) casually mentioned that it would be nice if Glenwood had a ring with a cover on it. Most of the gathering thought the idea impossible - but not Andy. He approached St. Vital City Council with a request for $100,000 to build a covered rink. He received a courteous hearing but a polite NO.
Andy is not one to take NO for an answer so he again approached Council in the years 1970-71-72. By this time Council knew that this was no idle idea and Miss Pierce (Councillor) took a look at our needs operating expences and other necessary information and went to bat for us... to Andy and Miss Florence Pierce we owe a debt of gratitude that the building now stands completed and in use.
